Parent Training on Positive Behaviour Supports

Training aim               

A two days training especially for parents and anyone who works in a challenging environment or meets children and adults people with challenging behaviour. The training deals with defining challenging behaviour, the importance of self management, prevention management, risk assessment skills to deal with persons with intellectual disability, autism, ADHD, Specific learning difficulties, cerebral palsy, multiple disabilities and good practice after an incident.

Training overview               

This well established training has been beneficial to hundreds of delegates. They have gained confidence by increasing their skills set and having to opportunity to discuss their feelings when dealing with high levels of confrontation. Feedback from trainings has seen practices changed around working with the result those parents, caregivers, teachers and staff feels safer and more able to do their job effectively. One of the important reasons for joining to this training is the opportunity to share experiences with others and to realise the feeling of being scared is not just theirs alone. A more confident workforce is in turn more able and more motivated. A sound grounding in the use of risk assessments enables more risks to be taken in a more managed way.


Manovikas Institute for Higher Education (MIHE) offers a skills development training program that can help you deal more effectively with your child’s behaviours. We would like to invite you for the program is called “Parent Training on Positive Behaviour Supports” and it offers parents several different ways to learn about behaviours and how they can be changed.

The use               

Positive Behaviour Supports is more than just a politically correct approach to behaviour management.


Shows that it is effective. The alternative is usually punishment, which decreases the likelihood of behaviour by taking something away (such as removing a favourite toy) or doing something unpleasant (yelling, spanking.) While punishment might work immediately, it has been shown to be ineffective in the long run and can increase aggressive behaviour, provide a model for additional undesirable behaviours, and strain the relationship with the caregiver (you). It is worth noting that to continue to be effective and maintain improvements, positive supports and feedback need to be ongoing as well. If you have made changes to improve your child’s health or happiness, and these have not helped to improve his behaviour in a reasonable time frame (a couple of weeks), or you are concerned about safety, help may be needed. Positive strategies and an intervention plan can be developed by a behavioural or educational team, usually in response to what is learned in a functional behaviour assessment (FBA) as described in the previous section.

The goal              

The Positive Behaviour Supports program is to help you help your child develop the kinds of behaviours he needs to get along better in the world.

Since parents play the most important role in a child’s development, the goal of Positive Behaviour Supports training is to help the parent become the child’s primary teacher in developing appropriate behaviours.

Parent training on Positive Behaviour Supports focuses on helping the parent help a child learn new behaviours that he is having difficult time learning.

For example, the child may be having a hard time with toilet training, or he may frequently refuse to comply with a parent’s requests.

Expected outcome of training               

Positive Behaviour Supports is an increase in parents’ skills that will lead to:

  1. an increase in the child’s desirable behaviours, and
  2. a reduction in the child’s undesirable behaviours.

When this outcome is achieved, parents will see an improvement in their interactions with their child, and their home environment should become more positive for the whole family.

The Positive Behaviour Supports training program provides valuable support to families in two ways:

  1. first, it helps parents deal with the behaviours that are currently causing difficulties for their child or the family;
  2. second, it gives them the skills to deal effectively with behaviours that may develop in the future.

In other words, the training gives parents a set of tools (behaviour management skills) that they can use, now and later, as they need them. 

The Training Class               

The major component of the MIHE  is a two days training class, where parents learn about the principles of learning and behaviour and how to apply them.

The classes are taught by an expert in behavioural training, they are four hours long, and they involve from 10 to 20 parents. The training is based on the following principles:

  1. Behaviours are learned. They usually come about because they satisfy some physical or emotional need that the child has.
  2. These behaviours become habits. They keep happening because of the way parents and children interact with each other.
  3. Behaviours and habits can be changed. Successful change requires that we understand what we do and change the way we respond to one another.

Trainers help parents learn how to carefully observe their child in order to understand why (i.e., in what situations) the child does the things he does. The parents are then taught to apply the principles of learning to help the child reduce his dependence on the challenging behaviours and develop more positive behaviours in their place.

Sometimes it is necessary for parents to change some of their own ways of reacting to or interacting with their child before the child can develop new ways of responding.

The class gives parents the opportunity to discuss with one another, and with the trainer, their experiences using the newly learned behaviour management techniques. By the end of the class, if parents have consistently practiced at home what they learned in the classroom, they will find themselves with a set of behaviour management skills that they can use in any setting with any child.

Expert help in analyzing behaviours and developing management plans               

Parents may receive expert, individualized help observing and analyzing their child’s behaviours. A behavioural expert conducts a full assessment of the family that includes a structured interview with the parents and an in-home observation. The assessment is intended to help the parents and the behaviour expert identify and target troubling behaviours. The behaviourist and the parent then work together to develop ways to intervene with the child’s behaviours. Parents may have the option of consulting with the behaviourist over a specified period of time as they work to implement these techniques with their child.

The skills you learn               

 In Positive Behaviour Supports training can make a big difference in the lives of you and your child. You will be able to help  your child learn the behaviours necessary to develop more positive relationships with people around him and to better ensure his  health and safety.

 Finally, you will give your child the ability to engage in a broader range of activities typical of persons without a developmental  disability.

 For Positive Behaviour Supports training to be successful, however, parents must be willing to accept the responsibility for  implementing the necessary management techniques consistently over time, in the home and in the community.

 Some parents will find that other priorities in their family life prevent them from being ready to do what is necessary to ensure  successful Positive Behaviour Supports training. They may find, for example, that their jobs or other responsibilities outside the home make it impossible for them to devote the time and attention needed to consistently implement behaviour management techniques with their child. Other parents may not want to maintain the rules and limits that must be sustained to get behaviour change over time. Still other parents may believe that the effort required achieving and maintaining change over time is too extreme and interferes too much with their family’s lifestyle. In cases like these, parents are advised to put off their participation in the training and reconsider it only if they feel they have the time, the support, the commitment, the personal energy, and the strong desire required to achieve success through a Positive Behaviour Supports training approach.

 Dr. Alok Kumar “Bhuwan” placed emphasis on human potential, which had an enormous influence on knowledge, skill and behavioural  development of people with disabilities and their families. He owe allegiance as a key humanist thinkers and an eponymous influence in higher  and vocational education for people with intellectual disabilities and developmentally delayed.

 The Manovikas programmes have received the highest recognition from All India Council for Technical education (AICTE), CBSE, NIOS and  Skill India programme.

 One of the founders of Manovikas Charitable Society, Dr. Alok is known for his person-cantered approach in development of vocational  education and quality of life for persons with high support needs.

Dr. Alok is currently member of WHO’s Global Clinical Practice Network, which is an international and multilingual network of mental health and primary care professionals contributing to ICD-11 development. He has been nominated by the Vice Chancellor, Amity University, as an External Expert for Departmental Research Committee (DRC).

He has been felicitated by several National Awards including SPANDAN Award of the National Trust, under Department of Disability Division, Govt. of India, in the ‘BEST PROFESSIONAL’ category working in the field of intellectual delays. HUF Excellent Award 2014 for contribution in the field of Empowering Disabled by Healthy Universe Foundation, Sri Ramanuja Mission Trust and Justice T.L.V. Endowment Foundation Awards for Achiever in Rehabilitation and Social Work, Chiranji Lal Dhanuka Memorial Service Award by Lions Club New Delhi Alaknanda, National Award by Kalyanam Karoti etc.
