World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is a day dedicated to all individuals with Down syndrome. Trisomy 21 is the clinical way of saying Down syndrome, which is the third copy on the 21st chromosome. In a person without Down syndrome, there are 46 chromosomes in the human body. Individuals with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome; we have 47.
The date for WDSD is set on the 21st day of the 3rd month as a representation of the extra copy of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome that people with Down syndrome are born with.
People with Down syndrome often have limited options in the decision making and policy changes that affect them. Decisions are often made without consideration of their opinions and preferences, and as a result, their rights are frequently violated.
