Be comfortable saying the words, won’t tell others what is said in the group, and not be over-protective. Understanding what your role is will help you as well.
Requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and safe relationships, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.
Legislation and Rights Framework to speak-up for the rights, and be able to make choices and decisions and originate the strategic plan.
Self-advocates believe educating other people such as doctors, staff, and guardians, is important so they can provide respectful support.
Developing opportunities for sexual expression, private space and private time and build skills for relationships
This issue is personal to me because I have been a victim of sexual violence. I was five when I was abused by my father. What my father did to me has caused issues like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). These issues still affect me as an adult.
A few years ago, I was in an abusive relationship. My friends and family helped me realize the relationship was not safe. They helped me get out of it. I know these experiences are not my fault. It is important that people with disabilities know what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like. We also need to learn how to advocate for ourselves to get out of these types of unsafe situations.
