About NIOS

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November, 1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic Education Programmes (OBE).Government of India through a  gazette notification vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify learners registered with it up to pre degree level courses whether Academic, Technical or Vocational. Association of Indian Universities, vide letter No . EV/11(354)/91/ 25 July, 1991 issued Equivalence of Senior Secondary Certificate Examination of NIOS. Know more about NIOS

Secondary Course Equivalent to Class X

This programme providing an secondary education equivalent to class X, for school drop-outs and neo-literates, out of school learners through Accredited Agencies. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has launched the secondary and sr. secondary level Programme, as an alternative educational programme, equivalent to the Secondary Education Programme of the formal education system.

This Course is equivalent to the Xth standard. You can choose subjects from the Scheme of Studies given in Table.

Subjects with * have theory as well as practical works.

  • Five Subjects with at least one language or at most two languages.
  • Minimum of five subjects.
  • Two additional subjects can also be taken.
  • The Learners are however advised to select the subjects as per their future plan of study and work.

 

Minimum age for admission:

14 years as on 31st July or 31st January

Required Documents:

Attested copy of Birth Certificate, or (ii) Transfer Certificate/School Leaving Certificate showing applicant's date of birth

Minimum qualification: Certificate of Class Copy of the Certificate Educational VIII pass or of the Secondary Qualifications
