Manovikas Charitable Society provides innovative educational services that empower people with intellectual disabilities to become more independent and seek employment.

The Institute of Further Education has nearly a thousand students using the Study Centre and 56 professional students and sixteen students with intellectual disabilities studying at the Community College to gain employable skills. To date forty five students have attended courses and four have taken up employment.  The small numbers are considered to be due to the misapprehension many employers have towards any disability, particularly intellectual disability, and the attitudes of protective parents who are reluctant to see their children becoming independent and in low paid employment. College courses are accredited with Indira Gandhi National Open University.  Manovikas is working towards establishing a career centre to support employment.

Currently the School for Inclusion has seventy pupils ranging in age from ten to fourteen years.  The school’s liability to support children to enter mainstream schooling has been overtaken by Government legislation for inclusive schools.  Numbers of school pupils have deliberately been allowed to fall as in the near future the school will close enabling the Society to concentrate on college activities and providing care and support for people with severe Intellectual disabilities.

A community project encourages and provides resources for students from poorer areas in East Delhi to receive education at the school and Institute and to help people with disabilities to receive public benefits and seek out employment.

The Saryogi project trains people to become carers in the community.

Care and welfare services

All the society’s activities including the hostel are about caring and supporting people with intellectual disabilities.  The hostel was established at the same time as the Society and, according to the Manovikas website, provides a home and care and encourages independent living for people with intellectual disabilities.  Currently there are fourteen male residents with a range of intellectual abilities.  The valuable experience gained from operating the hostel will be essential for managing the planned new day centres which will have the welfare and support of their members as their heart.

Promoting the rights of people with intellectual disabilities

Manovikas Charitable Society supports people with intellectual disabilities and advocates with Indian society and the Government to promote services for and the rights of people with disabilities.  The Society works to encourage public understanding of inclusion and the rights of people with disabilities.  The Managing Secretary personally and energetically advocates for the rights of people with intellectual disabilities and all activities in the school and college advocate the same.  A community project, the Sath Sath project, encourages people with disabilities to take up their rightful entitlements and to seek employment.

Today this college is part of the newly established Institute of Further Education along with an Indira Gandhi National Open University Study Centre which sees many students studying diploma and associate degrees.  The Community College also offers courses for students studying professional courses all of which are accredited with Indira Gandhi National Open University.  The initial school started in 1997 (the School for Independence) continues to support younger students to move into mainstream education in addition to encouraging some hostel residents to gain basic skills.  Manovikas is particularly concerned to support all their students to become more independent.
